Happy (late) New Year!

Hope you all rang out 2010 with style! We sure did. I nudged the mister awake (he'd been snoring in front of the telly for over an hour) just in time to see the count-down. After that they had the Lido Club dancers perform a number, some of them topless (yes, on national TV).  Let it never be said I am an inconsiderate wife.

Paris was wonderful, although you always come away wishing you'd seen more. Difficult at the best of times, impossible with three young children. The two older kids were great, the baby had his moments. Not that it's his fault - at 15 months all he wants to do is crawl around and explore the world. Being held on laps and strapped into backpacks meant the little man lost his happy thoughts at times.

The first day we spent most of the afternoon in the hotel while baby slept, but we saw plenty that evening.

We started with mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and beignets on the Champs Élysées, which was draped in Christmas lights.

We walked down to the Place de la Concorde (opposite end to the Arc de Triomphe) to oggle La Grande Roue, set up for the Christmas season.

ParisA7

We could see the Eiffel Tower glowing through the Sherlock Holmes-like fog that night.

ParisA8

I really liked this mermaid/merman fountain in the Place de la Concorde (check out the flag - happy accident):

ParisA2

I couldn't figure out if this mermaid was holding her baby or that night's dinner:

ParisA1

And what's the go with this? Since when do merfolk have buttocks?

ParisA3

We jumped back on the metro and headed to the Printemps shopping mall to show the kids the one thing we'd promised them.

ParisA9
ParisA10
Galeries Lafayette's impressive Christmas lights (although I really wish they'd fixed their sign)

Here it is. One of the largest Christmas trees in the world, inside the Galeries Lafayette*.

ParisA11

The whole thing was suspended from the roof by a cable. I had absolutely no desire to walk underneath it.

ParisA12

It was my first time at the GL. The baroque interior of the building is just beautiful with details such as gold gilding, stained glass and hand painted walls.

Then the clock struck 8pm and the baby turned into a pumpkin with a bad case of Tourette's.
We took our numb little faces (it was really cold) back to the hotel for Italian take away (sacrilege, I know).

That's probably enough pictures for now - more to follow soon.

Happy New Year, everyone!

*I'm still not really sure the difference between GL and Printemps - is GL inside the Printemps mall or vice versa? Can anyone help me here?

Happy New Year! Those photos are just awesome, and actually just gave me goosebumps! I simply can not wait to be in Paris myself! Can't wait to see the rest of your photos too.

Happy New Year! Did you see Sydney's fireworks display? Love your blog, how did you end up in the south of France? I think I might be able to shed a bit of light on the Printemps GL, from memory they are two separate department stores. Enjoy the new year. Megan

Love your photos Kirsty! I love Paris in winter - without the crowds it is so much easier to get around. Best wishes for a fabulous 2011 - can't wait to read more about your adventures in France.

Oh! what wonderful photos. They brought back wonderful memories of my 2 weeks in Paris in July. That Christmas Tree!!! We went to Galleries Lafeyette but not Printemps so I think they must be separate???

I love the merman with buttocks!
I always knew that Galleries Lafeyette and Au Printemps were 2 different department stores.
Happy new year, and happy blogging in the months to come.

Happy New Year, Kirsty! Seeing your photos were impressive enough. I think had I been there, you'd have caught me ogling at the beautiful lights and Christmas tree with my mouth open. Love the artwork on the walls in Galeries Lafayette. Trying to figure out how big the fountain actually is in real life. Your pic made it looked HUGE.

Oh I did enjoy looking at your photos Paris looks wonderful I went many years ago but imagine it must be magical at Christmas time. I like reading your blog the humour appeals to me. I live in WA and we just spent the morning on Cottesloe beach it only reached 38degrees so quite pleasant and there were fins in the water but they belonged to a couple of dolphins phew...
Happy New Year

Hi Laurie - 38 degrees, is that all!! :) I am very fond of Cottesloe beach (and the CBH). I remember hearing about sharks there a few years ago and I was really rattled, having swam there before. I hate sharks, yuck.
Enjoy the beach and the warm weather, I'm very jealous!
